April 7, 8 & 9

We are so excited to bring Spring Fling back to my favorite two towns in California, Nevada City and Grass Valley.  It has been eleven years since the Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter of ACBS has been to this area and it’s about time everyone returned.  We are very proud of this area.  Home of the largest gold deposits in California, beautiful lakes, clear rivers and tall pines.  This is a pretty nice place!  We have a rich history of gold mining, lumber production and agriculture throughout Nevada County.

Two of the most productive mines in all of California are close to town and are popular state parks, Empire Mine and Malakoff Diggins.  The North Star Mine became part of the Empire Mine and was owned by the Bourn family, the same family that built Filoli near Woodside.  A Place Built on Gold Mines, Nevada City, is a town preserved in Victorian history, despite having burned to the ground several times.  They finally rebuilt it using brick and mortar.  Grass Valley, only 3 miles away, is a bit more modern with many buildings rebuilt in the 1920s & 30s on mostly level streets. Both towns are charming.

The weekend begins on Friday with a shop tour of six wood boat and marine engine restorers en route to Spring Fling.  Starting with Northwest Classics in the Newcastle countryside, Dave Lobb and Greg (Rudy) Rudloff will be welcoming guests that wish to visit.  Next stop is Tony Brown’s shop, Western Runabouts in the Ophir/Newcastle hills near Auburn, where he and assistant Jacob Klever would love to show off their current projects.  In Grass Valley there are two shops to visit: Curtis Bauman Restorations, where he and Aaron Gack await your arrival, Eric Thearling works with engines, wiring and all of the amazing details for Riva’s.  Bob Robertson has been restoring boats for several years at his home shop, and lastly, Lew Dobbins will be showing off his shop and collection of rare Americana, both just outside of Nevada City.

When you arrive in Grass Valley, a stop at the Holiday Inn is REQUIRED.  Our spring Fling team of Virginia Gompertz, Annie Hill and Debra Dobbins have an afternoon designed JUST for the gals while the guys are off roaming around boat shops!   From Noon until 2:30 P.M. on Friday, we have a Treasure Hunt, of sorts, planned for all the gals.  Shopping in town, wearing a fun (or funny) hat of your choice, and picking up a special ticket at designated retailers will help familiarize you with town.  At 2:30 everyone convenes at Tofanelli’s for tea, coffee and some delicious munchies.  Here is where you turn in all the tickets you have collected.  Each chosen retailer has donated a door prize that we will be giving away.  What a fun and interesting place Grass Valley is!

After everyone has checked into their hotels and freshened up a bit, we are off to Nevada City for cocktails and dinner.  Owned by two left handed Chef’s, Chris and John, Lefty’s is a favorite local bar and grill.  Newly expanded and renovated, we will have an entire floor and deck with a bar to ourselves overlooking Deer Creek.

Saturday morning, rise and shine!  We are heading out for a country drive and history tour.  The North Star House was built for Mary Hallock Foote and Arthur De Wint Foote, the head mine engineer and manager of the North Star Mine.  The Foote Manor has been rescued and under renovation for a number of years now.  We then meander on down the road for a leisurely tour of the southwest end of Nevada County’s countryside.  Arriving at the Lake Wildwood Community Center we are stopping for a luscious box lunch with a view of the lake.  We intend to have a local winery on site for some wine tasting.  Be sure to bring your fun cars for the drive.

There are a few adventures nearby.  A 20 acre garden called Troll Knoll to visit: , some wineries to get back to, a famous large covered bridge at Bridgeport, a drive through canyons, across rivers and through forests too see.  You can also head back into town and peruse Nevada City or head to Empire Mine and visit the Bourn Cottage!

Saturday evening we are getting together at the Holiday Inn Ballroom for cocktails and dinner.  Here’s your opportunity to show us what you’ve got! The theme is Denim and Diamonds (they don’t have to be real) and we want you to interpret that anyway you choose!  Be creative!  This is supposed to be fun!  There will be a silent action with some ‘guy stuff’ we have dug up and dragged out for bid as well as other fun items.  And did I mention the ice cream bars?

Time to get up and get over to the ACBS board meeting, also at the Holiday Inn, or forget that and sleep in and go to breakfast.  There are a few places around that have a good breakfast.  You have time to do some of the things that you may not have gotten to on Saturday and have a safe drive home.
