This year Wood & Glory is celebrating Bob “MAHA” MAHER, Maherajah Water Skis, as the guest of honor. 2018 marks our 20th anniversary and Bob’s 20th year of continuous support and sponsorship of the ACBS Wood & Glory Antique & Classic boating event. WOW!
Join us in congratulating Bob and celebrating Maherajah’s 68 years of creating classic wood slalom and racing skis. Many of us have fond memories of skiing on a MAHA!
Maherajah Water Skies was born on the shores of Clear Lake. Ray Maher (Bob’s father) bought a little summer cabin in Jago Bay for the Maher family.
It was under the porch of that cabin in 1950 that Bill and his younger brother Bob began gluing up water skis. The Maher brothers enjoyed summers at the lake boating and water skiing, especially Bob. The organized ski tournaments in Clearlake Park and Soda Bay provided not only fun but customers as well. Some early customers were Jack McManus and the Lahti brothers – John and Peter. The really early skis sold for $20 a pair.
In 1952 Bob’s brother joined the Coast Guard leaving the younger brother to build skis on his own. Bob continued improving on ski designs throughout high school and in 1954 Maherajah was born. When Bill returned from service in 1956, Bob became sole proprietor after paying his brother $50 for the business.
One of Bob’s early customers was Carl Braito who became a really good Maherajah dealer and a good friend and mentor.
The 1960’s were “boom times” with the introduction of the tunnel concave bottom and varied size skis for different weight skiers.
Using his extensive knowledge of laminating exotic hardwood, Bob’s more recent endeavors are designing and creating wine bars, kitchen counter and bar tops along with custom wood products for homes and businesses.
When Bob was young, he listened to his much older mentors..…his father Ray, his Uncles Walter and Gordon, Aldo Rosetti, Westley Stone, the Brommer brothers and Carl Braito. These days Bob’s mentors are much younger, with the exception of Jim Carlsen.
